Review: Avatar at the IMAX
Written by Gary Phillips

avatarpostersmallI'm really going to have to let myself get over excited about this review. It's the shortest screening I've been too and probably the most exciting, for I saw the future of movies tonight at the BFI IMAX Avatar footage screening.

As soon as I walked in the massive IMAX cinema you could sense the anticipation and excitement of everyone in the room, we were about to see something spectacular and unique from a Director who hasn't released a feature movie since 1997.

The lights went out and an executive from Twentieth Century Fox gave us an excellent greeting to what we were about to see, he highlighted the positive response they had got for the trailer and the various excited messages they received, his favourite being " the trailer gave my brain an erection" which someone posted on twitter, Superb!
We all braced ourselves for something special and we were not disappointed.

Take the jump for the review of the Avatar day footage with spoilers.

Everyone put on their 3D glasses and we were welcomed by James Cameron literally in full 3D welcoming us to Avatar, it was my first experience of modern 3D and I was blown away, the avatar_1footage hadn't even started, James Cameroon was leaping out the screen and my jaw hit the floor.

The footage was 15 minutes in length showing 7-8 scenes from the early part of the film and it was quite stunning to watch and definitely the most advanced and technologically stunning piece of cinema ever shown.

The first scene was in a briefing room of soldiers, to be honest I didn't catch what they were talking about as I was in complete amazement as to what I was seeing, the depth and realism of the 3D environment was incredibly impressive, something that has to be seen to be believed, you could almost reach out and touch things.

A sergeant major is briefing soldiers of a war on the planet Pandora and informing of the near impossible chance of surviving it, Jake (Sam Worthington) rolls in in a wheelchair passing multiple benches in a stunning exhibition of 3Dism, it's a shr_Avatar_4_smallimple shot but it's undeniably impressive showing multiple layers and the real depth to the room.

The next scene shows Jake climbing into a tomb like machine with help from Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) who proceeds to transfer Jake's consciousness into his Avatar, a big blue CGI character who seamlessly interacts with the real life actors and set. Think Golum but 20 times more authentic and in 3D and you'ew almost close!

Jake stumbles around the lab and crashes into objects coming to terms with using his legs again, even though its through an Avatar, he wants to enjoy the moment and his expressions are perfect.

The following scene is of Jake in a forest In his Avatar form training with Dr. Augustine in her own Avatar coming face to face with monstrous creatures, it's almost fully CGI but so much more, in 3D it gives a more realistic feel with Trees, vines and other scenery flashing by our eyes in amazingly clarity and 3D definition. A chase through the forest follows and the first taste of action is seen, spot on animation with Jake being chased and incredible CGI that is just so much more impressive than anything ever seen before, this is the peak of current technology and a pure joy article-1208038-062046C7000005DC-179_634x347to watch.

Next Jake is in a beautifully coloured forest with bright flowers and trees that just jump off the screen through the 3D glasses. The female lead character Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) is shooting arrows at, and through the screen at a beast and brings it down to save Jake, the two characters then interact in faultless lip sync and dialogue that is stunning, a romantic element is shown which will form a big part of the film and all brilliantly acted.

The next clip is of Jake and a clan of fellow blue aliens on a mountain side, with a fully 3D waterfall pouring off the side and a vertigo inducing drop brought to life through the 3D glasses, the clan  approach some winged creatures where Jake has to prove himself and capture one to fly. As he succeeds he and the winged creature takes flight around the floating islands shown in the trailer and it shows off the CGI and 3D to the max, i  can't get enough of the 3D!

article-1208038-06204B2E000005DC-837_634x286The superb Avatar footage is ended with a montage of clips, most shown in the trailer, all looking amazing and rich in the HD 3D format, i really can't explain how stunning it was, the 3D visuals were better than i could of hoped, the colours were striking and clear, the animation was faultless, the sound was sharp, the CGI was perfectly matched to real life actors and the applause for the 15 minutes of footage was universally given, James Cameron has created something quite special.

On the way out everyone was impressed and talking of the stunning visuals but mainly about the 3D experience that we all enjoyed and that was definitely the star of the show. It's safe to say Avatar day was a success and with it the announcement of the future of cinema.
