Not content with successfully completing the impossible mission of rebooting Star Trek to acclaim from both Trekkers and the popcorn public, FSR have picked up the news that JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise have been discussing the future of the MI franchise.  The third film in the ongoing series (now 13 years old, bizarrely) was Abrams’ first feature and succeeded in melding the breathless pace of action and 21st century espionage with dazzling set pieces and, in Philip Seymour Hoffman, a memorable villain.  Glossing over John Woo’s misguided MI:2, Abrams take on the series managed to compete with the new kinetic style of thriller, yet kept its identity amongst the Bournes and the Bonds. Whether we want to see another MI film is debatable.  As FSR points out there’s a Star Trek sequel in the future, a franchise renewed with energy and momentum that could become as popular as the original series. Personally I’d rather see Abrams choose to accept that mission. |
