To celebrate the release of Adventureland, which hits UK cinemas on 11th September (our review here and competition here) we take a look at some different variations on the traditional American corn dog. The almighty corn dog is a favourite snack in Adventureland and certainly one to be tried here in the UK. Look what we’ve been missing out on!

Definition: The ‘corn dog’ is basically a hot dog covered in corn batter, deep fried in hot oil and then put on a stick. These delightfully unhealthy snacks are a big American favourite and can be bought from vendors and supermarkets right across the country.

Plain: For those loyal traditionalists who ask, “Why fix what’s not broken,” there is the classic corn dog, a working-class delicacy enjoyed across the globe for almost a century. First you roll your sausage in flour, and then you dip it in batter, shove a stick in one end and throw it in a deep fat fryer until it comes out golden brown. Ensure you use the correct sausage: a sausage based mistake could end in disaster.

Marshmallow: Around a camp fire? Just realised you have flour, corn batter and sticks but no sausages?! Don’t panic, shove some marshmallows on your stick and follow the above routine! No need to deep fat fry, give your battered marshmallows a good roasting over the fire.

Fruit Salad:  If you are bored of making your fruit unhealthy by simply putting it on a stick and dipping it into a chocolate fountain, you should definitely try covering it in batter and deep fat frying it! Corny fruit, what more have you ever wanted?

Barbeque: Marinate the hot dog in a BARBEQUE marinade for 24 hours. Then coat the hot dog in a layer of thick BARBEQUE sauce, followed by a generous coating of corn batter mixed with BARBEQUE sauce. After frying, dip in BARBEQUE sauce. If you are not too keen on barbeque flavouring I suggest you avoid this option.

Corn Rabbit: Before you start accusing us of animal cruelty and all that jazz, I am not suggesting you go and shove a stick up the rear end of a rabbit, roll it in batter, cover it in batter and deep fat fry it... you would have to shave it first at least! Joking! This is the basic corn dog principle, but using a carrot instead of a sausage.
